Retailers across County Durham now have new armour in the fight against shop thieves committing retail crime as the industry’s leading crime reporting and monitoring software, SentrySIS, sees its first arrests.
‘SentrySIS’ is a computer system that allows the police and retailers to share information and intelligence about active offenders in their area. Retailers can upload MG11 witness statements and CCTV footage direct to the police via a secure server.
Earlier this month, a man from Darlington became the first person to be charged with an offence following a report submitted to the police through the SentrySIS system. The 37-year-old was charged with shoplifting.
The charge followed a theft at Boots in Darlington after which the security staff uploaded the evidence directly to the police, via the SentrySIS platform. As a result a man was arrested, fully admitted the offence and was subsequently charged due to the quality of the evidence provided via SentrySIS and how robust the software system made the process.
A Sergeant at the police constabulary using the software commented and said: “The system is designed to make the process of reporting a crime much quicker, freeing up time for both store staff and for officers. SentrySIS is already reaping benefits with wanted persons being arrested by the police after being spotted by eagle-eyed retail staff. Another advantage is that retail stores on the system are now able to help protect each other by circulating images of suspects and prolific offenders at the touch of a button.”
